Haverhill, MA (March 1, 2018) – The Northern Essex Community College baseball team opened up their season on Wednesday evening under the lights at Trinity Stadium with a sweep of Great Bay Community College by a scores of 4-3 in eight innings and 9-6.
A Riley Magee (Windham, NH) base hit in the bottom of the eighth inning drove home Rob Lagasse (Newburyport, MA) from second base to give the Knights a dramatic walk off win to open the season.
The Knights recorded eight hits in game one, but it was Magee and Lagasse who provided the games primary offensive output. Each recorded two hits, while Lagasse recorded 3 RBI's to go along with scoring the winning run.
Ryan Sharkey (Salisbury, MA) earned the game one win as he pitched innings of three hit relief while striking out six batters. Jacob Berresi (Wakefield, MA) got the start and battled through control issues (six walks) to strike out seven over the game's first three innings.
Magee led the offense in game 2 as he went 4 for 4 out of cleanup spot in the lineup which included a towering homerun to left field. Alexander Almonte (Lawrence, MA) also tallied a homerun as part of 3 for 3 performance which also included a double. For the game the Knights pounded out 14 hits.
Michael Goodin (Dracut, MA) got the win in game two as he came out of the bullpen and pitched 4 and one-third innings of relief allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out two and surrendered just one base on balls.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday March 10th when they will open up a 12 game Florida swing over the college's spring with a double header against Vermilion Community College (MN).
